William P. Duffy
While primarily a landscape painter, I am also inspired by urban and still life subjects.
When I was younger I would have had so much more to say as to why I
paint, how I paint and what I paint. But this really all you need to
know, this is the essence of it.
I am not aware of any particular style of painting that I am trying to
emulate, so much as simply being acutely aware of my own feelings and
thoughts when I am painting either directly from life or the even more
introspective posture in the studio. However I am finding that a
particular motif or lighting and atmospheric situation is more likely to draw out of me deep-seated spiritual and emotional responses. I
seek out those places and situations.
Utterly immersed, painting from life, is the best way for me to become
aware of what I think and feel about where I am. A personal response
to life is the result. These sketches can then be used, very much the
same way as a writer would use a journal,to develop larger paintings in the studio.
All of this introspection is aimed at creating personal, original and
evocative works of art, that, hopefully, touch my audience in a deeply
satisfying way.
Ultimately, I try to get in touch with my soul and stir the souls of others.
