Standing erect with serene expression, his powerful torso enrobed in an elegantly draped sanghati or mantle, this sculpture manifests the spiritual riches of the bodhisattva.
Gandhara is the ancient name of the region comprising northwest Pakistan and Afghanistan, bounded on the west by the Hindu Kush mountain range and to the north by the foothills of the Himalayas. Alexander the Great conquered this region and, together with the Indo-Greek kings that succeeded him, introduced classical traditions that became an important part of Gandara's artistic taste over the next seven centuries.
