SIDNEY RICHARD PERCY WILLIAMS (BRITISH, 1821-1886)

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

The landscape painter Sidney Richard Williams was born in England in 1821 to a highly noted family of British artists (Boddington, Gilbert and Williams). After embarking on his artistic career, he used the pseudonym Percy to distinguish himself from them.

After completing his education, he began exhibiting in 1842 at the Royal Academy, the British Institute of Oil Painters, the Society of British Artists and other major venues in the United Kingdom. Percy continued to exhibit at these venues quite successfully throughout his lifetime, and went on to found the Barnes School of Art.

He painted his landscapes primarily in Devon, Yorkshire, the Lake District, Skye and North Wales. He died on April 13, 1886 in Sutton.

Today, he is considered one of the top British landscape painters of his time and when his works do surface on the art market they are highly sought after. His works can be found in public and private collections worldwide, including in museums in Montreal, France, Salford, Sunderland and Sheffield, England.
