J.M. STRINGER GALLERY

Guilherme Marques d’Oliveira was born in Brazil on October 12, 1887 of Portuguese parents. He was a painter and sculptor.

Sometime during his young adulthood, Marques moved to the Belgium Congo and resided and worked in Kinshasa which is now located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There he painted local scenes as well as creating wooden sculptures. He also created many sketches and engravings.

Marques d’Oliviera is today considered one of the fathers of African paintings. He created over 152 paintings during his lifetime. He died in Kinshasa, Congo on May 15, 1960.
